I will be returning this May for a visit to the home of my love for nature and landscape photography - Hocking Hills State Park in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains of Southeastern Ohio - to lead and teach a photo walk workshop on Thursday, May 15, 2025, from 9 AM to 4 PM.
This workshop will be conducted as a "photo walk" along my favorite trails amongst the woodlands, waterfalls, and wildflowers of Hocking Hills. Unlike my previous photography workshops, this program WILL NOT include a classroom component on digital editing. The emphasis will be on field instruction and image capture.
All levels of skill are welcomed, but it is recommended that participants have a tripod and a camera with close-up/macro capabilities. A fair amount of hiking will also be involved throughout the day, including some fairly steep ascents and descents in and out of the sandstone gorges. The total number of miles hiked during the photo walk could be up to six miles.
A unique aspect of my teaching approach is using only a medium-format film camera, one lens, and a handheld light meter to demonstrate how I compose and expose a scene or subject. By limiting myself, I can more effectively demonstrate the basics of careful and intentional image-making in nature without the ease and convenience of a digital camera. This teaching approach will tremendously benefit the workshop students, even if they use their digital cameras.
Wet weather will be welcomed, and you'll see how and why it can be a photographer's best friend, especially with spring nature subjects in this beautiful area of the Appalachian foothills.
I will assist participants in learning to see as artists and how to "work a scene" rather than chasing the ordinary snapshots that most visitors to Hocking Hills leave with.
There will be a break for lunch. However, meals are not included in the price.
The cost is $100 per person, payable on the morning of the photo walk workshop. You can pay in cash, check, or Venmo.
To maintain the quality of the instruction, I will limit the group size to the first 15 people who register and then begin a waitlist in case of cancellations.
To register, email jim@jimcrotty or message me on this page. I need your name, email, and phone number.
As we approach May 15th, I will distribute the schedule for the day and tell you where to meet at the beginning of the photo walk workshop.
I have been photographing Hocking Hills since my first visit 45 years ago! May has been the month that has delivered my most stunning images. Join me and see why on May 15th!
