This is a special one-day workshop that is part of the Super 1 Day program of nationwide photography education promoted and organized by the Professional Photographers of America. This particular program will concentrate on best techniques and tools for optimal lighting of both nature and portrait subjects. The full day program will be a balance of both in-classroom instruction on digital editing and workflow of photographs as well as field instruction in the gardens of Cox Arboretum MetroPark. Amateur odels will be provided for demonstrating lighting techniques that balance both ambient and provided light. Also included in the class will be student image critiques during the last hour of the program. Box lunches from Panera Bread will be available for purchase.
Don’t miss out on this awesome event! Registration is now available for both members and non-members of PPA. Non-members just need to register on the PPA web site with a email and password but that part is free. Classes for the May 2018 Super①Day are $99 per session if you register before April 30, 2018. Prices are $120 at the door. We do charge a $25 service fee for any returned checks and, unfortunately, we cannot provide refunds.

Thursday and Friday May 17-18, 2017 - The Inn and Spa at Cedar Falls | Hocking Hills, Ohio
Waterfalls flush with spring rain, sandstone gorges glowing in the luminance of new growth on the Beech and Elm trees, forest floors covered in ferns, mist-filled hollows. This is May in the Hocking Hills of Southeastern Ohio. Situated on the edge of the Appalachian Foothills Hocking Hills has gained worldwide attention for the mystical beauty of its unique landscape, flora and fauna.
I’d love to share why I have come to know Hocking Hills as the home of my creative spirit as a nature and landscape photographer during a one and a half day spring nature photography workshop from Thursday May 17 to Friday May 18, 2018. I will be leading a small group (limited to the first 20 people who register) to my favorite locations within the park for optimal photographic results during what I consider the most beautiful time of year in this location, spring.
We will have time on the trail for practical, hands-on field instruction on proper camera and lens settings as well as my experienced guidance in how to fully “see” the landscape and compose imagery that goes far beyond the simple snapshot with a camera phone.
I welcome all levels of photographic experience with the DSLR camera, from just starting out to serious amateur photographer. In addition to field instruction I will also be providing excellent guidance and advice on the tools and techniques for best results when it comes to digital editing and workflow using Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop as well as select plug-in programs. The classroom portion of the workshop will be conducted at the beautiful and state-of-the-art meeting space - The Gathering Space - at The Inn and Spa at Cedar Falls, conveniently located minutes away from the best scenic locations in Hocking Hills State Park.
The program will begin at 8AM on Thursday morning and conclude at 1PM on Friday afternoon. Weather permitting I will also include a session on night sky photography on Thursday evening. Hocking Hills is one of the few “dark sky” locations remaining in Ohio.
Included in the $150 fee is guided instruction, course material and hand-outs and lunch on Thursday and breakfast on Friday. Transportation and losing are not included but I highly recommend making reservations for one of the rooms, cottages, cabins or yurts (my personal favorite) at The Inn and Spa at Cedar Falls by calling 740-569-5015 as soon as possible. Mention the “Jim Crotty Spring Photography Workshop.”
“Why during the week, on a Thursday and Friday?” I have been teaching and leading group workshops in Hocking Hills for the last nine years. Previously I’ve scheduled my programs on weekends, however, due to the increase in popularity of Hocking Hills as a weekend destination of choice, I’ve decided by conducting this workshop during the week I will be able to provide my workshop students with a more pleasant and less crowded experience for photography and enjoyable learning when on the trails.
Minimal camera equipment is required. A base-level DSLR camera such as the Canon Rebel models, the “kit” lens and a good, sturdy tripod is all that is needed to benefit from this workshop. Students are also welcome to bring laptop computers for the classroom portion of the program but it is not required.
To register, email firstname.lastname@example.org or call 937-896-6311. The fee is $150 per person, payable the morning of May 17th. Students are welcome to pre-pay as well via PayPal to “email@example.com.”
Please register today. This workshop is likely to fill-up fast!
Presentations to Schools, Clubs and Corporate Organizations
I've presented my work and my creative vision to various groups over the last four years, including many schools, camera clubs and professional organizations. I have a very relaxed style, incorporating a fair amount of story telling about my many experiences photographing in the field and for a wide variety of clients as well as what it took to overcome some personal obstacles and challenges to finally being on the right path with my life and my artistic vision.
I like to have fun with my presentations, but most important of all, I like to inspire and motivate my audience to follow their own dreams and goals in life as well as develop and integrate creative vision in all that they do. Obviously my presentations are geared toward the showing of my photographic images. I use select photographs, via both large format, mounted prints as well as audio-visual digital slide presentations through a MacBook Pro and projector, that best illustrate a particular photographic technique as well as those that communicate my unique creative vision and approach toward life.
I adjust my presentation style and material according to the select audience I'm scheduled to speak to, such as "how I got involved with photography" for school groups or "Finding the Light: More Than Just a Photographer" for social and corporate organizations.
Fees for presentations are based on intended audience, time required, travel and hand-out materials. Fees can vary based on whether the organization is a non-profit or profit. I retain the right to donate presentation time to select non-profit and educational organizations. Please call 937-477-9324 or email to learn more about how my presentations can enhance your classroom or organizational meeting. Please schedule at least three months in advance.
